The Pueblo of Laguna is located in north central New Mexico, thirty miles east of the city of Grants and forty-five miles west of Albuquerque with the reservation covering approximately 600,000 acres.  Interstate 40 runs east to west through the center of the reservation.

The Pueblo of Laguna was the last of the 19 pueblos in New Mexico to be established.  The current enrollment totals 7,071 members of which 3,488 reside on the reservation.  This figure does not include non-Indians and Indians from other tribes.  An elected Governor is the highest office and is elected for a two-year term and can serve two consecutive terms.  The Governor presides over the tribal business and weekly council meetings.  Council members are elected for two-year terms and are the ultimate decision-making body on all matters undertaken by the Tribe.

Laguna was originally established based on the tribes need to restore and protect their own land from contamination.  The Jackpile Mine, the largest open pit uranium mine in the world, was located on their reservation and was contaminated with low level radioactive ore, which was a potential threat to the tribe’s quality of life.  With this obstacle in front of them, the tribe determined they would develop a construction company.  The Pueblo of Laguna recognized the lack of experience to organize a construction company, so a Board of Directors made up of five recognized leaders in the industry was appointed in June 1988.  The directors recruited the President and General Manager by August 1988.

In March 1989, other key personnel were hired and the Pueblo of Laguna capitalized Laguna substantially.  Estimating, scheduling, contract negotiations, equipment selections, cost accounting & control systems, approvals, and overall planning were completed by July 1989.  Approximately $11 million worth of construction equipment was ordered by July 1989 and scheduled for delivery between July and December 1989.  Equipment remains a multi-million dollar asset to the company, and Laguna continues to update and replace equipment as required.
